BALTIMORE, MD --(Marketwired - February 24, 2016) - Dr. William Craft, president of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., has been elected to chair the Board of Directors of Lutheran World Relief, an international humanitarian organization.

Craft was elected at the LWR board meeting Feb. 17-18 in Phoenix, Ariz. He succeeds Dr. Gloria S. Edwards, who has completed her service to the board. Edwards has served on the board since 2006 and is a former president of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League.

"We are honored and excited to have Dr. Craft as our new chair," said Daniel Speckhard, LWR president and CEO. "His leadership, experience and his passion for the work of Lutheran World Relief will serve us well as we seek to expand our impact in alleviating poverty, injustice and human suffering around the world."

Craft brings to the board more than 30 years of experience as an educator and administrator. Prior to his appointment at Concordia College in 2011, he served as dean of Luther College and vice president for academic affairs, holding a faculty appointment as professor of English. He also served in various capacities in the English department of St. Mary's College of Maryland.

Craft was first elected to the LWR Board in Jan. 2013. He traveled to Honduras in Feb. 2015 with the rest of the LWR Board to observe the agency's work in the Central American nation, especially with coffee farmers.

Craft earned his doctorate in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and has been a fellow of the Newberry Library and the American Council on Education. In the summer of 2008 he completed the Institute for Educational Management program at Harvard University.

The Board also elected Jonathan Schultz as vice chair and Emma Graeber Porter as secretary, and approved two new members: Dr. Kathi Tunheim, who holds an endowed chair in Management & Leadership in the Department of Economics & Management at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn.; and Ken Jones, vice president and CFO of the Annie E. Casey Foundation in Baltimore.

Schultz, who was elected vice chair, is a vice president and general counsel for Concordia Publishing House in St. Louis. He previously served as the secretary of the LWR Board. Graeber Porter, who will take over as secretary, is the president of Graeber Consulting in New York.

Craft, Schultz and Porter are current members of the LWR board. Both Tunheim and Jones assume their roles on the LWR board effective immediately.

Tunheim, who is a graduate of Concordia College and received her Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, is an expert in strategic planning and organizational development. Her experience in the corporate sector includes stints with Northwest Airlines, Carlson Companies and American Express Financial Advisors. At Gustavus Adophus, where she has taught since 2007, she founded the Gustavus Women in Leadership Conference and has been instrumental in the success of the Economics and Management Department's Alumni Mentoring Program.

Jones, who has been with the Casey Foundation since 2008, is responsible for all of its finance, accounting, compliance, grants management, facility, operations and information technology. He also spearheads the foundation's disaster recovery and relief process. He previously served as CFO for Danya International, a public health and education strategy development organization, and Jhpiego, an international health NGO affiliated with the Johns Hopkins University.
